BrightPath STEAM Academy Virtual and In Person Summer Camp

Dr. Jessica Wagenseil and students, faculty, and staff from the McKelvey School of Engineering helped host the BrightPath STEAM Academy Virtual and WashU Summer Camps on July 18 and 19, 2024. Several hundred students from 20 U.S. states and countries around the world, including Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, and the Bahamas participated in the online camp on July 18. WashU Racing gave a presentation on their Formula SAE team about designing, manufacturing, assembling, and driving a formula-style race car. Forty-five students were on campus in person on July 19. The students participated in four general sessions: Science, “Forensic Science Spy Labs Investigator”; Engineering, “NASCAR: Let’s Build a Race Car”; AI & Technology, “AI, Programming, and Flying Drones”, and Mathematics, “Math, Smart Money, and Statistics”. After their general sessions, the students went on lab tours in the McKelvey School of Engineering hosted by the Bioproducts Engineering Lab (Dr. Marcus Foston), Silva Lab for Cardiac Arrthymias (Dr. Jon Silva), Musculoskeletal Soft Tissue Lab (Dr. Spencer Lake), Bayly Lab for Brain Biomechanics (Dr. Philip Bayly), Environmental NanoChemistry Lab (Dr. Young-Shin Jun), O’Brien Lab for Maternal-Fetal Health (Dr. Christine O’Brien), BME Teaching Lab on Electromyography (Dr. Joe Klaesner), Dai Lab for Decoding and Encoding Soft Living Matter (Dr. Yifan Dai), and the Soft Nanomaterials Lab (Dr. Srikanth Singameneni).
