BrightPath STEAM Academy One Day Virtual and WashU Summer Camp

Designing a sneaker with legos.

Dr. Jessica Wagenseil, Dr. Sharniece Holland, and students from Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science helped host the BrightPath STEAM Academy One Day Virtual and WashU Summer Camp on July 22, 2022. Fifteen students were in person at Wash U, with several hundred additional students online and in person at two other sites. The students participated in three general sessions: Science, “How humans are designed”; Engineering, “Build a sneaker”; and Mathematics, “Young money masters”. After their general sessions, the students went on lab tours in the McKelvey School of Engineering hosted by the Bioproducts Engineering Lab (Dr. Marcus Foston), Thermal Fluids Research Group (Dr. Patricia Weisensee), Silva Lab for Cardiac Arrthymias (Dr. Jon Silva), Wang Research Group for Flexible and Stretchable Electronics (Dr. Chuan Wang), Musculoskeletal Soft Tissue Lab (Dr. Spencer Lake), and Mechanobiology Venus Flytrap Lab (Patricia Widder).

Learning about bioproducts from Dr. Foston.
Learning about thermal fluids research with Dr. Weisensee.
Learning about cardiac arrthymias with Lucy Woodbury from Dr. Silva’s lab.
Learning about stretchable and wearable electronics with Junyi Zhao from Dr. Wang’s lab.
Learning about musculoskeletal soft tissue mechanics with Leanne Iannucci from Dr. Lake’s lab.
Learning about mechanobiology of venus flytraps with Patricia Widder.
